Gogyohka Society Poetry Events
Spring 2009 Gogyohka Events with Enta Kusakabe
April 19, 2009: Introductory Gogyohka Workshop
Meet and study with ENTA KUSAKABE, Japanese poet, founder and pioneer of the Gogyohka short poetry form. Gogyohka, literally translated, means "five line poem". Gogyohka invites the writer to capture a moment or feeling, or distill a complex issue into a single, clarifying thought. Though the form is simple, what results are honest, humorous, reflective, vividly sensory short poems. Enta developed this new form in 1957 after many years of writing Tanka and Haiku, and finding those forms restrictive and uniform in sound. This was a huge break in tradition, since Haiku and Tanka have been the primary forms of poetry in Japan for hundreds of years. Enta has since published several volumes of his Gogyohka and in the early 1990's began pioneering Gogyohka in Japan as a new movement in poetry. There are now half a million people in Japan devoted to writing Gogyohka, and the form has begun spreading to the U.S., Thailand , and Korea . Last year the US chapter of the Gogyohka Society was formed. Enta lives in Japan and travels to the US only once or twice a year. This workshop is a special opportunity to learn about the form and its philosophy directly from the Master himself. You will also write your own Gogyohka and share with the other participants.
After the workshop, Enta will be accepting submissions of workshop participants' Gogyohka for publication in his monthly Gogyohka magazine in Japan
